Why Do We Sleep?

Why Do We Sleep?

I was wondering today why it is that we have to sleep. You have maybe never thought about it before or perhaps you think it is just a common sense case of us having to ‘recharge our batteries’. But if it is solely for purposes of rejuvenation then why does it need to take such a long time? I can fully charge my mobile phone or laptop within a couple of hours yet we take a lot, lot longer…

Have you ever realised that we spend a third of our live unconscious? When you get to the age of thirty this means that you have spent time ten years of it being asleep! If you find that a depressing thought then try this one for size; by the time you reach sixty you will have been sleeping for twenty years! I love to go to sleep but it seems like a bit of a waste somehow, doesn’t it?

Think of all the things you could do in this space of time. An eighteen year old could have done six years of his schooling in the time that he had spent asleep! When you get to old age the amount of time you had slept could have been spent in a well-paid job that had earned you a really good pension. It’s all a bit strange if you think about it.

And then there is the business of dreams; do they actually serve any purpose? Some people think they have ‘meanings’ and spend a lot of time and money finding out what they are. Or are dreams just a way of your brain ridding itself of unnecessary information in the subconscious? Perhaps a dream is the equivalent of the human brain having a poo.

It makes you wonder what it’s all about…

And lastly, in my humble opinion all of those who are into this thought of a more planet friendly lifestyle really need to look at this. This Enigin Energy Savings blog has some really amazing ideas for industries who are concerned about thier environmental impact, I am really digging them right now.
